Experiment of an Ancient Breed
A Short Story by
David Owain Hughes
Elizabeth, who was named after her great-great-grandmother, had been the sole manager and proprietor of the Lamb and Flag pub for the past nine years. When she'd first acquired the establishment fifteen years ago, she'd been the joint owner, along with her brother. He died six years into running the place, forcing Elizabeth, who preferred to go by Liz, to take on full responsibility.
Paul, Lizâs brother, had been taken ill unexpectedly.
âIâm sorry for your loss, Elizabeth. It seems Paul had a rare, and certainly unusual, blood disease that weâve not seen or treated in this hospital,â had been the doctorâs cold, unforgiving words. âWeâd like to keep your brotherâs body for a couple of weeks, run some tests and see if we can prepare for the next case we have involving the extraordinary illness.â
Sheâd found his frankness astonishing. Had she not been emotionally drained at the time, Liz would have taken more than a few strips off him, but then he added, âIt would be a good cause towards medical science . . .â, swaying her judgment somewhat.
Her mind had reeled. What if itâs in me? What about Jason? The babies!
âBy all means, come in for a check-up,â the doctor had said after sheâd told him her concerns.
Six weeks later, Paulâs body had been retuned, and the green light to bury him had been lit.
Liz hadnât had time to mourn. She had a business to look after along with her family: her baby twin girls, four-year-old nephew and younger brother, Jason, who all lived at the pub with her.
The first four years without Paul had been tough. A slog. Not just physically, but mentally, too. Had Liz not had Jason to help mind the children whilst she worked every hour God sent, then it would have been an impossibility to keep everything going no matter how good she was at spinning plates.
When Jason turned sixteen, Liz put him to work behind the bar â not that she had to do much arm-twisting. Heâd been chomping at the bit to get involved ever since Paul had passed.
âItâs not fair to take all the work on yourself, sis,â had been his words after theyâd buried their brother. âLet me at least do some bar work for you.â
âNo,â had been her stern reply. âYou can help me out by looking after the little ones â keep them entertained, warm, and their bellies full for me. That would be a massive help.â
Jason coming of age had been a welcomed relief, taking away much of the strain that had been building and threatening to cave her in. When Liz realised how much of a good thing it was, sheâd suddenly become scared, knowing that if her baby brother had been slightly younger, meaning there wouldnât have been aid for another year or two, then she would have gone under.
Stress would have killed her.
And if the stress hadnât, then giving up the pub would have. That act
